Support CUPE 3902 Strike Vote
A solidarity picket for collective bargaining!
Wednesday, November 23
12:00-3:00pm
Sidney Smith patio
100 St. George Street
OPIRG-Toronto is calling for an information picket in support of CUPE 3902’s Unit 1 strike vote. CUPE 3902 is the trade union representing Teaching Assistants and some course instructors at all U of T campuses. These workers coordinate tutorials, run labs, and grade most undergraduate assignments and exams at this university. They’re in collective bargaining with the U of T Administration and need broader support!
The CUPE 3902 Bargaining Team is committed to reaching a negotiated agreement. However, after four months and 18 bargaining meetings, it’s evident that the U of T Administration is unwilling to take seriously the everyday issues that affect students and workers at this university.
In response to the employer’s stalling, CUPE 3902 is opening a strike vote next Tuesday, November 22. Strike votes are used to put additional pressure on employers and to speed up negations. A positive strike vote does not mean a strike is certain; it simply gives union leadership a mandate to call a strike if negotiations continue to be ineffective.
What’s at stake?
· Quality of education for undergrads: CUPE 3902 is demanding
smaller labs and tutorials
· A living wage for graduate students: The Administration wants to
remove the legal guarantee of the funding package and continue
to chip away the funding package’s value
· A safer and more equitable university: better childcare benefits,
better anti-discrimination policy, pay equity between undergrad and
grad TAs and course instructors
· Much more! See cupe3902.org for bargaining proposal details
The right to collective bargaining is under attack across Canada. Come show your support for good jobs, quality education, accessible universities, and collective bargaining rights for all!
