Theory and Practice of Photojournalism
Wednesday, March 30
6:30-8:30pm
with Jon Elmer
Photographs influence and transform politics. They transcend language barriers, reveal hidden realities, aand test the boundaries of what is "appropriate." Behind every influential photograph is someone holding a camera. How can we ensure that our photographs are useful to movements for social justice? Learn how to get started and what to expect, how to navigate conflict journalism, political minefields, creativity and its handcuffs. Discussion and workshop with Jon Elmer, independent photojournalist who has lived abroad since 2003 covering the West Bank and Gaza Strip. He is a regular contributor to Al Jazeera English, and his work has appeared in Le Monde diplomatique, The Journal of Palestine Studies and The Progressive, among others. He has covered war and liberation movements throughout the Middle East, including Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, and Lebanon. http://jonelmer.ca/
